6 Tips To Balance Your Time As A Work From Home Parent

Life is hectic at the best of times, but juggling parenting duties with working from home can be particularly tough. Managing a small business from home, two little ones, while squeezing some time in for the blog, I’ve learnt the importance of finding ways to better manage my time.

Making a conscious effort to be more productive with your time can make a life a lot easier.

Hopefully, these 6 tips can help you balance your time as a work from home parent.

Get a better nights sleep

While many guides will tell you to sleep longer, the harsh reality is sleeping longer will only eat into your day. With this in mind, the focus should be to sleep better. Things like cutting out caffeine & visual stimulants at least an hour before bedtime means the sleep you do have is of much better quality. Reaching the REM sleep phase and maintaining it for longer periods means you could even afford to lose an hour of sleep each night. And when you wake in a better frame of mind, you’ll be far more productive.

Establish a work from home routine

One of the great things about working from home is that you have control over your schedule. However, without a routine, it can become too easy to let your productivity levels slide.

Getting up and dressed as if you were leaving the house to work, can help get you in the right mindset. Also, keep a diary to hand and plan out each day, ticking off each item as you go.

With a solid routine in place, you will reap the rewards of not commuting.

Stop unnecessary trips out

Losing 10 minutes here and there can quickly prolong your working day by as much as an hour or more without any extra productivity. You don’t need to walk to the newsagents when you can grab the latest sports news at https://sportnews.in/. Better still, you can read it while eating lunch to be more productive on your breaks.

Try to complete your errands in your leisure time and you’ll spend less time in work mode.

Have a clear workspace

If you worked from home during the early stages of the pandemic, you probably survived by working from the bedroom or sofa. However, if it has now become a more permanent feature, you will need office space.

If you don’t have a room for this, you could create one in the garden, garage or use the dining room. Alternatively to using a separate room as an office, any table or work surface big enough to house your laptop and paperwork will suffice. But keep it tidy, having a tidy workspace only increases productivity. Invest in some good desk organises to keep everything easily accessible and in one place.

An added benefit to having a defined workspace is that it gives you a clear mental barrier between work and leisure.

    Use after school and breakfast clubs. Just because you’re in the house doesn’t mean your kids have to be there. You wouldn’t take them to the office so don’t allow yourself to have them around when your home is your office. You won’t be able to focus on parenting or working, you’ll feel torn and stressed and it’s no fun for anyone.

      After school & breakfast clubs are a great idea. But for me, my 4-year-old goes to a pre-school that don’t do after school clubs and my 6-month-old is home with me all the time so unfortunately, I don’t have the option of them not being here. I agree with you on feeling torn, it’s definitely a juggling act.
